christofle-art-deco-ribbed-ashtray-dish
Christofle Art Deco Automobile Ribbed Ashtray Dish

Christofle's take on the ashtray leans fully into Art Deco geometry, with a series of tightly spaced concentric ribs radiating out from a plain center well to the outer rim. The stepped profile catches light in bands as it moves around the piece, giving what could have been a purely functional object real visual interest.

A single cigarette rest is cut into the rim, angled to hold a cigarette steady while it burns down, and the piece is marked "Christofle" in the well, confirming the maker without any additional ornamentation needed. The ribbed banding is the entire design statement here, in keeping with the more restrained, architectural side of French Art Deco silver.

This example shows genuine age with some surface tarnish consistent with a piece that has not been recently polished, though the ribbed detailing remains crisp throughout and would respond well to a light polish for anyone who wants to bring back more shine.

Made in France and measuring 4 1/2 inches in diameter, it is a well proportioned piece for a bar cart, side table, or desk, whether used for its original purpose or simply displayed as a small piece of French Art Deco design.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0639/1247/6810/files/Christofle_Art_Deco_Automobile_Ribbed_Ashtray_Dish_1.jpg?v=1792624730
