This Japanese Meiji period vase pairs a deep cobalt blue glaze with a delicate overlay of woven silver. Slender silver bands run from the shoulder to the foot in even vertical stripes, marked at intervals with small bamboo like joints, and a band of tightly plaited basket weave wraps the neck and base. A twisted braid finishes the rim, framing the rich blue interior.

Made in Japan during the Meiji era (1868 to 1912), the vase belongs to a tradition of export wares in which skilled metalworkers wove fine silver wire and strips over ceramic bodies, borrowing the look of bamboo basketry. The result is a piece that feels both architectural and tactile, with the glossy glaze set against the hand worked metal.

The cobalt glaze is deep and even, with a lustrous shine that makes the silver stand out vividly. The silver has the soft, natural patina of age, particularly in the woven areas at the neck and foot, which adds warmth and character.

Standing 5 1/2 inches tall, it is a perfect size for a shelf, mantel or desk. It is lovely on its own, with a single stem or dried grasses, or grouped with other Meiji export wares, silver and ceramics for a collected look. A refined find for lovers of Japanese decorative arts, mixed material objet and rich color.

Collectors Notes

The cobalt glaze makes this one of the most striking of our Meiji export vases, and it sits beautifully beside other woven silver pieces in our Silver collection.

Who Are You Buying From?

Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
